That's an Ear Full

Shoplifter chops off Wash. security guard's ear

Police in Washington state say a shoplifter with a hatchet sliced off most of a store security guard's ear.

Longview police Sgt. Doug Kazensky tells The Daily News that the shoplifter pulled a small hatchet out of his waistband Monday afternoon and swung, chopping off nearly the entire ear.

The guard was taken to a Portland hospital for emergency plastic surgery in an attempt to reattach the ear.

Luke 22:49-51

New International Version (NIV)

49 When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?” 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.

51 But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.

What does God's Story scripture teach us about God's desire to make us whole?

This scene from the Gospel of Luke takes place just hours before Jesus would be crucified. Jesus and his disciples had left their dinner table and gone for a walk to a nearby garden. When Jesus had spent a while in prayer Judas and his little army showed up to arrest Jesus.

The reaction of Jesus' followers was to fight. That wasn't the desire in the Lord's heart. He was ready and willing to make the coming sacrifice so people could again be whole. In this moment we see him start the process of making people whole again. "Stop this!" he says, then he heals the physical body of the broken man as he prepares to heal our broken relationship with God.

How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?

  • Make a list of the places in your life that are "broken." Then spend sometime talking to Jesus about your brokeness.
  • Ask Jesus to start the healing process in your broken areas.
  • Seek out someone who might be able to help you work through your hurt.

How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture, and our story to others?

It's not everyday we see a story that looks almost identical to a moment in scripture so today's story interesting just for that.

  • Show today's story and the scripture to friend and ask them what they think about the likeness.
  • Ask your friend what they think of Jesus response.
  • Share about your brokeness and how Jesus is making you whole again.
