Get Me Outta Here!

Bear climbs ladder to escape Colorado skate park

SNOWMASS, Colo. – A bear that wandered into a sunken skateboard park and got stuck was rescued when officials lowered a ladder so it could climb out.

The bear was discovered Tuesday morning in the Colorado resort town of Snowmass. Officials say it apparently was in the park all night, and couldn't get out because of the steep concrete sides.

Workers from the Parks and Recreation Department lowered a long ladder. The bear eventually climbed the ladder and wandered away.

No injuries were reported to people or the bear.

Romans 7:21-25 (New Living Translation)

21 I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. 22 I love God’s law with all my heart. 23 But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. 24 Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? 25 Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey God’s law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin.

What does God's Story teach us about our need to be rescued?

Have you ever been lured into a situation only to feel that you were stuck? Stuck in a sin that you couldn't get out of alone. The natural tendancy is to try to get out of it by ourselves. But we can't. The bear in today's story needed that ladder; and when we are stuck in sinful habits, we too need help.  Paul himself felt stuck in his sin. His words resound ... "Who will .-deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!"  Isn't is amazing that Jesus has provided a way out of our sin.

Connecting today's story and God's Story to my story

  • Are you currently stuck in a struggle with a particular sin? Confess it to the Father and receive His forgiveness.
  • Confess your sin to someone in your life that you trust and ask them to keep you accountable from falling back into that sin.
  • Read the rest of Romans 7 this weekend.

Connecting today's story, God's Story and my story with my friend's story

  • Is there a friend with whom you've been sharing God's Story and Your Story who is stuck in sin? Give them a ladder ... Open a conversation about how Jesus has provided a way out.
  • Do you have a friend who is following Jesus who has fallen into a struggle with a particular sin? Ask them how you can help them get out.
  • Find a friend and read Romans 7 together and talk about your struggles.
  • Remember: It's much more important for us to tell our friends how much we need Jesus, than it is to tell them how much they need Jesus!
