What were the "Top Ten" Stories of 2007?

Acts 16:16-26

Paul and Silas in Prison

16 As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling. 17 She followed Paul and us, crying out, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation.” 18 And this she kept doing for many days. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And it came out that very hour.

19 But when her owners saw that their hope of gain was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers. 20 And when they had brought them to the magistrates, they said, “These men are Jews, and they are disturbing our city. 21 They advocate customs that are not lawful for us as Romans to accept or practice.” 22 The crowd joined in attacking them, and the magistrates tore the garments off them and gave orders to beat them with rods. 23 And when they had inflicted many blows upon them, they threw them into prison, ordering the jailer to keep them safely. 24 Having received this order, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.

The Philippian Jailer Converted

25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them, 26 and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone's bonds were unfastened. (ESV)

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about dealing with tough times?

Paul and Silas were experiencing the kind of tough times that you see in action movies or in today's news. Most of us (unless you live in a country where Christians are tortured) will never come close to going through the problems they faced. But what did they do? They had a little praise party at midnight! In this passage, the word "praying" in the original language refers to prayers of praise and joy, not prayers of request. How could Paul and Silas do this?
They had the right perspective in the middle of a "bad news" story! Paul and Silas understood the difference between happiness and joy. Happiness is a feeling based on good things happening in our lives. Joy is a choice we can make that is based on knowing that God is in control, loves us and has a perfect plan for us.
Will you choose joy in 2008 even when life's problems and circumstances seem to imprison you? God may not send an earthquake to free you right away, but you can be a "praising prisoner" until He does. When life beats you up, will you find your joy in Jesus? It will make all the difference in your life story in 2008.

How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?

  • Thank God that He is in control. Thank Him for using your problems and circumstances to help you trust Him more completely. Ask His Spirit to teach you to choose joy in 2008.
  • For one or two weeks, keep a written journal to record your daily response to problems and disappointments. At the end of this exercise, write a note to God thanking Him for what you learn.

How can you connect today's story, God's Story scripture and your story to others?

  • Get some friends together late night and talk about how you respond when life seems to beat you up. At midnight, read the story of Paul and Silas and pray for each other.
  • Think of a friend or family member who needs Jesus and is currently facing tough times. Pray for this person and for the opportunity to care for them, listen to them, and make the connection with your story and God's Story.
