Do you have any New Year's resolutions?

Take a look at how to start 2008 the right way.

James 4:13-16

Boasting About Tomorrow

13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— 14 yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. (ESV)

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about making plans for our future?

Planning for 2008 according to God's will is what all followers of Christ must do! To help you do that, how would you answer the following questions related to today's scripture....

...according to James 4:13-14, why shouldn't we plan our future without God being directly involved?

...look again at verse 16. Why should we avoid having an "attitude"?

...verse 15 teaches us that we should commit ourselves to the Lord. How can you do that as you think about 2008?

ANSWERS:

...life is uncertain

...any perspective without God is wrong

...depend on the Lord completely, all the time...

How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?

  • Thank God that He is in complete control. Confess any way in which you lived 2007 your own way rather than God's way. Praise Him that He will help you with a fresh start this year! Ask His Spirit to fill you with Godly wisdom every day, all year.
  • Write down your "top ten" list of ways you want to live to please God in 2008 and keep it where you can look at it regularly.
  • Ask an older Christian friend to hold you accountable on your list, by doing a monthly check up with you.

How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?

Bring up the topic of New Year's resolutions with those you are trying to reach with the Good News of Jesus Christ. You will learn a lot about the story of others by asking them to talk about New Year's resolutions. If they don't have any, this will help you understand even more about them. Trust Jesus to show you how to share more of your story (and God's Story) as you talk about your plans for 2008 in light of today's scripture.
