Oh Captain

This year I began to coach a Junior High Soccer team. With it come many joys, defeats, and emotions. Toward the beginning of the season we saw a real leader emerge from our team. We appointed her captain because, she had true joy and enthusiasm for the sport and her piers, respected by all, a voice that the entire team listened, and She was a natural leader.

As the weeks moved on she saw that many of her team mates had scored goals. She began to think that goals was the glory of our team. She playing in the center of our field had shown true leadership and had a huge voice on the team.

Jealousy creped in.She lost sight of her key position on our team, because her emotions got the best of her. She chose to defy her coaches and and left the team stunded as to why she didn't trust us. Moments later we took her out of the game, she was in tears but still had not grasped the reality of what was most important, she was a leader on this team, and had become a poor example to her teammates.

1 Timothy 4:12

New International Version

Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.

What does Today's God's Story Scripture teach us about being an example?

God calls us to set an example, but what does that mean in our lives? Timothy was young in his ministry and life and these words spoken to he say a lot. Five large areas of life that are given to Timothy to focus on: Speech, conduct, Love, Faith, and in Purity. These are areas were even adults struggle in. The advantage is God is calling attention to this at his young age so that he might grasp and hold on to this deep knowledge at a young age as something to be striving for, as well as give him the courage to see that if he upheld these 5 things that he could hold his head up high as a respectful person.

How can I connect today's God's Story to my life?

What does it mean to you to set an example? Are you allowing your emotions to get in the way of the example you set for your friends, or teammates, or classmates? Take some time this week to ask God, and spend time dwelling on:

Lord do I set an example in:

  1. Do I set and EXAMPLE in my Speech?
  2. Do I set and EXAMPLE in my Conduct?
  3. Do I set and EXAMPLE in Love?
  4. Do I set and EXAMPLE in My Faith?
  5. Do I set and EXAMPLE in Purity?
Take time with each one and allow God to speak to your heart and lead you on which area God is proud of you in. Pick one that God has especially laid on your heart and make that your focus this week. Come back to the reality of being a captain...what has God made you a captain in?

How can I connect today's Story, God's Story, & My story to others?

As you have spent time with "you and God" as you have been working on things in your life begin a journey of living it out for your friends. See that you are a leader, that you set an example. appologise for times when your ego, or pride got in the way of you being real with your friends.

A Not-So-Black Friday

As I was watching our local news on Friday night, in the midst of story after story about Black Friday shopping, a different kind of story came out of the small Central Kentucky town of Winchester. Someone decided to, as the local news put it, "Play Santa in the local Walmart." Several anonymous individuals were stepping to the cash registers to pay cash for large purchases that families were making. I knew right away that this was the perfect story for today's DailyBide. Imagine my surprise when the only reference to this anywhere was a headline for the story. No video. No printed story. Only a headline. In contrast to that, a Google search of "Black Friday" prompted over 39,000 results. Yet somewhere in Central Kentucky families are thanking God for the "Good Samaritan" that paid their debt.

Story headline can be found at www.wlextv.com.

Luke 10:25-37 (ESV)
The Parable of the Good Samaritan
25 And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" 26He said to him, "What is written in the Law? How do you read it?" 27And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself." 28And he said to him, "You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live."
29But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" 30Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. 31Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. 34He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, 'Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.' 36Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?" 37He said, "The one who showed him mercy." And Jesus said to him, "You go, and do likewise."
What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about helping others?
It seems that today's God Story scripture is one of the most often mentioned scripture passages. At least when it comes to calling someone a "Good Samaritan." It was even mentioned in Today's Story when I first heard it. One family referred to the anonymous donors as "Santa," "An Angel," and a "Good Samaritan." Today's God's Story scripture reminds us that we need to be aware of our surroundings as we journey through life, and when someone is in need, we should reach out to help them. In the Parable of the Good Samaritan we see the story of a man who not only helped the injured man, but he had such a reputation that the inn keeper trusted him to return and pay any further costs of caring for this stranger. Jesus told this story in response to the simple question, "Who is my neighbor?". Who is your neighbor? Who do you need to seek out this Christmas season to bring a little extra joy to their life.

How can I connect today's God's Story to My Life?
  • Read the Parable of the Good Samaritan a few more times today. Look for different people in the story to connect with. How is your story similar to their story? Ask God to uncover some things in your own story today. In what areas of your story can grow closer to Him.
  • What is your reputation? Would someone trust you the way the inn keeper trusted the Good Samaritan? Ask God to work in and through you to give you such a trusted reputation.
  • Thank God for the people in your life who have helped to meet your needs throughout your life.

How can I connect Today's Story, God's Story, and My Story with Others?
So who are your neighbors? Ask God to point out some people in your life this week who may need a little extra "joy" in their life this Christmas Season. Watch and listen for stories. Most likely it won't be people laying alongside the road bleeding. It will probably be a neighbor who is lonely because they've lost a loved one this year. Or maybe a family who has a son or daughter serving in the military. Maybe it's a neighbor who has been diagnosed with cancer who wonders if this is their last Christmas on this earth. You will know them when you see them. Look for ways to encourage them, not just today, or this week, but throughout the entire season of Christmas.

Tradition

Generations of Tradition

Decades ago when my dad was a young boy my family started a tradition that has stood the test of time. Only once in my memory has the tradition been suspended. Every yeary the men of my family gather early on Thanksgiving morning. We bundle up in the warmest clothes we can find, don our hunter orange caps and vest and with shotguns on our shoulders we begin the hunt. We walk the family farm tracking rabbits.

To some it may seem like a brutal ritual, but the truth is we haven't been very successful in a long time, because the point of the morning isn't the hunt. We gather for the time together, the hunt is just the excuse we use. The best part of hunting rabbit's is silence isn't required, it is one of the few game animals where louder is better. We walk and tell stories, stories from hunts past. My dad will tell tales from mission trips he's been on, while a family friend argues the details of those trips. We laugh and cherish the walk for the tradition. We remember the family members who have passed on and the family friends who have moved away and can no longer join the hunt.

We remember and give thanks to God for the love and lives we have known. Tradition is the point of the hunt and the stories we share are the foundation.

Deuteronomy 11:18-21

New International Version (NIV)

18 Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 19 Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 20 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, 21 so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land the LORD swore to give your ancestors, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth.

What does God's Story scripture teach us about the value of tradition?

Chapter 11 starts with an admonition for the people of Israel to remember that their children did not get to see everything that God had done. They didn't get to see all of the miricales that occured as the Hebrews left Egypt. The children didn't know of the discipline God had brought against Israel because of the people's hard hearts. The adults were to tell future generations about all the things that happened during the move to the promised land. They were to pass on the heritage of Israel and the greatness of God.

Today's verse speaks specifically to the need to constantly remember the works of God and pass them to future generations. Passing on the tradition would help continue the pursuit of the One True God.

How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?

Everybody loves stories and we seem to share more around this time of year.

  • Write down the story of how you met Jesus.
  • Tell your story to someone else.
  • Find a story in the scriptures that you didn't know and share it with someone else.

How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture , and our story to others?

People love to talk about family traditions. Those stories give you an open door to work from.

  • Ask a friend to share some of their favorite holiday traditions (Be ready sometimes pain comes with these memories.)
  • Share how your family traditions have impacted your life with Jesus.
  • Share with your friend the new scripture story you found.

Hungry? Snack on this!

3 Square Meals are so YESTERDAY!!!

Every company that makes or serves food in America has had to digest the same reality: We've become a nation of really weird eaters.

We eat what we want, when we want. No more of this breakfast, lunch and dinner stuff. We snack all day. We casually skip meals. And we want to customize everything we cram into our mouths.

It's as if our social-media habits are going right to our stomachs.

A culture hungry to put its personal stamp on everything it touches is driving some foodmakers and restaurant operators bonkers. At the same time, it's offering all kinds of opportunities to those willing to sprint ahead of the food curve. Nowhere is this trend more palpable than with Millennials.

"Eating weird is the new normal," says Shawn LaPean, executive director of Cal Dining at the University of California- Berkeley, which serves students 30,000 times daily. "If students eat any square meals per day, it might be one. The rest is filled with snacks and food on the go."

These may seem like quirky, student eating habits, but they're evolving into lifetime traits. The numbers are mind-boggling. At least 35% of the meals eaten by Millennials aren't meals at all, but snacks, reports consultancy The Kruse Company. Four in 10 Millennials snack more than once daily, reports research firm Technomic. And only 5% of all consumers eat three square meals a day, says Technomic.

"The idea of a normal day being breakfast, lunch and dinner is a myth," says Ron Paul, president of Technomic.

"The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing." Psalm 34:10

"Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men, for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things." Psalm 107:8-9

"Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty." John 6:35

What does God's Story Scripture Teach us about being HUNGRY for God?

Its beyond true that our eating habits are crazy. In fact today I had pumkin pie for breakfast, and random snacks the rest of the day. This time of year we are thinking a lot about food, stuffing ourselves, & eating our food on our own time.

It begs the Questions, Do we snack on our God time? If we seek after the Lord and what he has for us, we will lack NO GOOD THING, we will not be thirsty & be filled with Good things. God Is what we need, he is our bread, or life line.

How can I connect Today's God's Story to my life?

  • Ask yourself if you are hungry for God in your life?
  • Are sitting down for a Good Meal with Jesus?
  • What makes me Hunger for God in my life?

Most of all as it is thanksgiving week, take a moment to REALLY "Thank the Lord for his UNFAILING LOVE, for he SATISFIES..." and gives us all that we want and more.

How can I connect Today's Story, God's Story, and My story to others?

  • Pray that your friends this week though surrounded by turkey have a chance to see or reflect on Jesus and that they might come to know Jesus, so they will never Go Hungry or Thirsty.

Colossians 3:14-16 (ESV)
14And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. 16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about Thankfulness?
It becomes more and more obvious every year that Thanksgiving is becoming the forgotten holiday. As soon as the Halloween candy was pulled from the shelves, the Christmas candy went up.  Aa a matter of fact, at 12:01am on November 1, I saw the first Christmas commercial of the year. This year, perhaps more than ever, we need all the help we can get to remember that there is a day set aside for us to pause and give thanks.

As we enter this week of celebrating Thanksgiving, I challenge all reading this DailyBide to spend some time taking today's God's Story scripture to heart. Then, it won't just be the folks in the App Store who are helping us get ready for Thanksgiving. The One to whom we are most thankful will be preparing our hearts even more.

How can I connect today's God's Story to My Life?
  • Make a list of all the ways God has been at work in your life throughout the last year. Consider writing a "Thank You" Letter to Him for you all He has done in your life.
  • Do a search for the word "thanks" at www.biblegateway.com. Read through all of the scripture passages from God's Story that are focused on giving thanks.

How can I connect Today's Story, God's Story, and My Story with Others?
  • Don't just pause on Thanksgiving Day to be thankful - make it a week of thankfulness.
  • Make a list of all of the people in your life for whom you are thankful. Choose an appropriate way to show your thankfulness to them throughout this week.
  • Who are the people in your life who have been responsible for you getting to know Jesus in the way that you have? Find a way to express your thankfulness to them this week for all they have done for you.

Storing Up Treasures

$15,000 comic book stolen from Nebraska home
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A rare Spider-Man comic book valued at $15,000 has been stolen from a home in Lincoln, Neb.

Nearly 50 years later, it sells for thousands of dollars and in May, an unnamed buyer purchased a mint condition copy for more than $1 million.
The owner of the stolen comic believes it was taken between Oct. 27 and Monday morning.

Matthew 6:19-21 (ESV)
Lay Up Treasures in Heaven
19 "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust[a] destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

What Does God's Story scripture Teach Us About Treasures?
So where's your heart? Today's God's Story scripture teaches us that it is much better to invest our resources and our lives in things that have an eternal value than in "things" that will eventually be destroyed, or possibly even stolen.  How are you investing in what matters most?  If you want to know where your heart is, look at your treasures.

How can I connect today's God's Story Scripture to My Life?
  • Take some time this weekend to take an inventory of your life. Make a list of the things that you are storing up on earth.
  • Take some time this weekend to make another list as well. Make a list of the ways that you are storing up treasures in heaven.

How can I connect Today's Story, God's Story, and My Story with Others?
  • Do you know someone who is more concerned with story up treasures on this earth than in heaven?  Spend some time with them soon. Look and listen for ways to share God's Story with them.
  • As we enter Thanksgiving week and then the Christmas season, it is the perfect time to talk with others about storing up treasures in heaven.  Talk with your family or some friends about how you, as a group, might be able to meet the needs of others this year.

A God Who is Big Enough

Scientists boost battery strength with small holes

Batteries for phones and laptops could soon recharge ten times faster and hold a charge ten times larger than current technology allows.

Scientists at Northwestern University in the US have changed the materials in lithium-ion batteries to boost their abilities.

One change involves poking millions of minuscule holes in the battery.

Batteries built using the novel technique could be in the shops within five years, estimate the scientists.

Joshua 10:12-13

English Standard Version (ESV)

12At that time Joshua spoke to the LORD in the day when the LORD gave the Amorites over to the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel,

   (A) "Sun, stand still at Gibeon,
and moon, in the Valley of Aijalon."
13And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped,
until the nation took vengeance on their enemies.

Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? The sun stopped in the midst of heaven and did not hurry to set for about a whole day.

What does God's Story scripture teach us about the largeness of God?

God is huge! Israel is a fledgling nation trying to move into the land God had promised them. As they make that move they find themselves in a lot of battles. This, however, was a significant battle. Five kings gathered their armies together into one force. This amassed army was intent on the destruction of Israel to keep them from continuing to take the land as their own.

There is debate as to what the meaning of verses 12 and 13 is, was it literal or another meaning. It doesn't really matter, what matters is that our tremendous God did something huge that was noticed by everyone on the battle field. It was large enough to remind Israel and surrounding nations that God was bigger than the sun and more powerful.

How can we connect today's God's Story Scripture to our lives?

How do we connect such an overwhelming story to our lives? I don't really need God to hold the sun in place (except maybe the day before a test). Most of the time our lives are filled with "little things."

  • If God is big enough to hold the Sun in place He is big enough to hear about and care about our "little things."
  • God is ready to walk with us into intimidating places if we will just ask Him to.
  • We don't have to be anxious because the God that can stop the sun in the sky cares about us.

How can we connect today's story, God's Story Scripture, and our story to others?

It is fun to watch the progression of technology. When I thought about the extension of battery life the story of Joshua was the first thing that came to mind in scripture. We want our batteries to last longer and Joshua needed a longer day. It also made me think of some of my friends and students. They say things like, "I have been to bad to be forgiven," "God couldn't do anything with me." Here's my one suggestion for today...

  • When you have a friend that uses that argument, share Joshua's story with them. The sun is something we know to be huge and powerful. It always rises and always sets the same way. Yet we have a God big enough to stop that same sun in its tracks. I am certain he is a God big enough to love you.

Walking Forward

Illustrator Live-Sketched New York City Marathon While Running

New York city marathon cartoonist christopher niemann

It takes skilled man to paint while running. Especially during the insanity that is the New York City marathon. But famed New York Times cartoonist Christoph Niemann managed to pull double duty as both marathoner and artist Sunday.

Fully engrossed in his mission to “live-draw” the marathon, Niemann didn’t break any race records (that honor was reserved for the, but he did manage to complete the race at 4:08 p.m. He may have been out of breath, but he was certainly not out of inspiration as he crossed the Central Park finish line.

Starting off with his trusty markers in hand – though he did lose a cap to his pink marker somewhere around mile 9 – Niemann chronicled his voyage to the starting line, his running troubles, and the inspirational runners he met during the race. His drawings were a mix of humor and humility: he portrayed himself as a quickly discharged battery around mile 3.2. Expectedly (and not unlike the rest of our daily tweeting) he created a number of sketches about his hunger pangs during the race. But he somehow found the juice to keep going and keep drawing, and in the last mile and a half, he broke out the paintbrushes to chronicle his final steps of the race.

Matthew 5: 3-10

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
   for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
   for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
   for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

What does God's Story Scripture teach us about walking forward?

Fun fact: "Be Happy" is the greek word for "blessed" in matthew. Jesus is telling us that we need not be sad about the road this world has us on. Jesus is telling us to be HAPPY, because God rejoices in you, no matter the situation you are in right now, he wants to give you the blessed, the kinddom of heaven, comfort, your inheritance of the earth, you will be filled not hungry, shown mercy, you children of God, because the kingdom of heaven is yours!

So as Blessed people what are we to do? Fun fact part B: "Blessed'', in Hebrew means "To go, walking, straight, make progress" in essence Walk forward, with your God!

How can we connect today's God story scripture to our lives?

Showing that you can overcome things in life, means you have to make a choice to walk forward. Take a look at where God has you or your family:

  • Are you walking forward in life?
  • Are you happy where God has you?
  • Have you taken the time to be

Get real about God in your life, Get real about letting his blessing be a part of your life.

How can we connect today's God Story Scripture to our lives?

  • Pray that your friends might be "joined to the name of God"
  • Pray that they will be happy
  • Pray that they will be Makarios
  • Give your friends the grace to walk forward
  • Pray for their journey to find God's Road in thier life
  • Pray for your wishlists

Family

'Family Circus' creator Bil Keane dies at 89

Bil Keane's "Family Circus" comics entertained readers with a simple but sublime mix of humor and traditional family values for more than a half century. The appeal endured, the author thought, because the American public needed the consistency.
Keane, who started drawing the one-panel cartoon featuring Billy, Jeffy, Dolly, P.J. and their parents in February 1960, died Tuesday at age 89 at his longtime home in Paradise Valley, near Phoenix. His comic strip is featured in nearly 1,500 newspapers across the country.
Jeff Keane, Keane's son who lives in Laguna Hills, Calif., said that his father died of congestive heart failure with one of his other sons by his side after his conditioned worsened during the last month. All of Keane's five children, nine grandchildren and great-granddaughter were able to visit him last week, Jeff Keane said.
"He said, 'I love you' and that's what I said to him, which is a great way to go out," Jeff Keane said of the last conversation he had with his father. "The great thing is Dad loved the family so much, so the fact that we all saw him, I think that gave him great comfort and made his passing easy. Luckily he didn't suffer through a lot of things."
Jeff Keane has been drawing "Family Circus" in the last few years as his father enjoyed retirement.
Keane said in a 1995 interview with The Associated Press that the cartoon had staying power because of its consistency and simplicity.
"It's reassuring, I think, to the American public to see the same family," he said.
Although Keane kept the strip current with references to pop culture movies and songs, the context of his comic was timeless. The ghost-like "Ida Know" and "Not Me" who deferred blame for household accidents were staples of the strip. The family's pets were dogs Barfy and Sam, and the cat, Kittycat.
"We are, in the comics, the last frontier of good, wholesome family humor and entertainment," Keane said. "On radio and television, magazines and the movies, you can't tell what you're going to get. When you look at the comic page, you can usually depend on something acceptable by the entire family."
Jeff Keane shared the sentiment, saying "Family Circus" had flourished through the decades because readers continue to relate to its values of family moments.
"It was a different type of comic, and I think that was my dad's genius — creating something that people could really relate to and wasn't necessarily meant to get a laugh," he said. "It was more of a warm feeling or a lump in the throat."

Deuteronomy 6:1-9 (ESV)

1"Now this is the commandment, the statutes and the rules that the LORD your God commanded me to teach you, that you may do them in the land to which you are going over, to possess it, 2that you may fear the LORD your God, you and your son and your son’s son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be long. 3Hear therefore, O Israel, and be careful to do them, that it may go well with you, and that you may multiply greatly, as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.
4"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 5You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

What Does God's Story scripture Teach Us About Family?
One of the things I always loved about "Family Circus" was the various conversations that would take place between the kids and their parents, and at times, their grandmother. What a great family it is. It seemed like the whole world knew what the Keane family was like. This week, on the first Sunday after the death of Bil Keane, the setting for the family was a church service. As the offering basket reaches the dad, young Dolly reminds him, "Remember Daddy, you don't hafta pay for Jeffy or PJ. Children 3 and under get in free." I can't help but think that this had been a real life experience for the Keane family.

So what is your family like? For some reading this today it may be a whole lot like the family from the comic strip. For others it may be totally different. Many of you reading this may be in a home with only one parent because of a death or divorce. Regardless of what family situation you find yourself in, the points of today's God's Story scripture still fit. God says we are to talk about Him at home. So do you?  Do you talk about God's Story when you sit at home and when you go out? Do you talk about it as you go to bed at night and as you get up in the morning? It's not too late to start. And you don't have to wait for your parents to lead the way. You can begin today.

And if you haven't ever enjoyed a laugh with "Family Circus," you can see recent comic strips at www.FamilyCircus.com.

How can I connect today's God's Story Scripture to My Life?
  • Read Deuteronomy 6 a few times today.

Honor Those Who Have Fought the Good Fight

Veterans Day: Tradition plus a unique basketball game
President to lay wreath at Arlington before heading to aircraft carrier-turned-arena

Veterans Day commemorations vary from the unique to the traditional Friday.
President Barack Obama plans to attend the first college basketball game to be played on an active Navy aircraft carrier after laying a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery's patriotic ceremony.
Parades are planned in many communities. The stock market will be open but banks and most government offices will be closed.
Veterans Day comes less than two months before all U.S. troops are due to leave Iraq and while nearly 100,000 still serve in Afghanistan.
At 11 a.m. EST at Arlington National Cemetery, a wreath-laying ceremony will take place at the Tomb of the Unknowns, followed by a ceremony inside the Memorial Amphitheater, adjacent to the Tomb, officials said. A prelude concert by the United States Army Band "Pershing's Own" is slated at 10 a.m. inside the amphitheater.
This year's event will be hosted by Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki; Russell C. Vowinkel, Commander-in-Chief of the Military Order of the World Wars; and Major General Michael S. Linnington, Commander of the U.S. Army Military District of Washington and the Joint Force Headquarters–National Capital Region, according to Arlington officials.
Ceremonies are also planned at many national cemeteries. The Department of Veterans Affairs has a complete list here.
In San Diego, preparations were under way Thursday aboard the USS Carl Vinson, the aircraft carrier that buried al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden at sea.
On Friday afternoon, coaches Tom Izzo of Michigan State and Roy Williams of No. 1 North Carolina are confident their teams will put on a great Veterans Day show for the approximately 7,000 in the crowd, including Obama, the nation's basketball-fan-in-chief, plus a national TV audience.

2 Timothy 4:6-8 (NLT)
6 As for me, my life has already been poured out as an offering to God. The time of my death is near. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. 8 And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing.

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about the honoring a life?
Today around the US many will be honoring and remembering veterans from various generations who have fought for the freedom of our country. Some of these veterans are, like Paul in today's God's Story scripture, nearing the end of their life. They have not only fought for our country, they have fought an even greater battle - the spiritual battle for our eternal freedom.  If you pause today to honor veterans in your family or community, consider also pausing to remember those who have fought the good fight of faith for you.

How can I connect today's God's Story to My Life?
  • Take some time today to write a letter to God to say "Thank You" for the new life He has given you.
  • Ask God today to be your strength as you journey through this life and "fight the good fight."
  • Browse through the Book of Acts and some of Paul's Letters this weekend to see the many was he "fought the good fight."

How can I connect Today's Story, God's Story, and My Story with Others?
  • Do you have a veteran in your family? Take some time today to sit with them and ask them to share part of their story.
  • Is there someone in your life who truly represents a life of following Jesus? Spend some time with them this weekend. Ask them how God has seen them through the spiritual battles they've faced in their life.
  • If you can, get some friends together this evening to watch the Carrier Classic. After the game spend a few minutes talking about the veterans you know. Listen for ways that you may be able to segway into God's Story and how Jesus paid the ultimate sacrifice for our eternal freedom.

Blind man uses his ears to see

Mark 10:46-52

The Message (MSG)

46-48They spent some time in Jericho. As Jesus was leaving town, trailed by his disciples and a parade of people, a blind beggar by the name of Bartimaeus, son of Timaeus, was sitting alongside the road. When he heard that Jesus the Nazarene was passing by, he began to cry out, "Son of David, Jesus! Mercy, have mercy on me!" Many tried to hush him up, but he yelled all the louder, "Son of David! Mercy, have mercy on me!"

49-50Jesus stopped in his tracks. "Call him over."

They called him. "It's your lucky day! Get up! He's calling you to come!" Throwing off his coat, he was on his feet at once and came to Jesus.

51Jesus said, "What can I do for you?"

The blind man said, "Rabbi, I want to see."

52"On your way," said Jesus. "Your faith has saved and healed you."

In that very instant he recovered his sight and followed Jesus down the road.

What does God's Story scripture teach us about chasing after Jesus?

Over the years I have learned a few things that are kind of significant and cool about this story. First is that Bartimaeus was known. He wasn't just your run of the mill flat character from a story. We are told who his father is, this is a big deal. For your family to be mentioned they had to have some standing in the community.

Second, Bartimaeus leaves his coat behind when he heads to Jesus. A coat was the "red and white stick" of the first century. When you needed to get somewhere you would ask a friend to grab your coat and lead you to your destination. "Bart" left his coat behind, he didn't want to cling to the old life, he abandoned his crutch because he had to get to Jesus.

He didn't care about public ridicule. He didn't care about tripping. He just called for Jesus and then went after Jesus with reckless abandon.

How can we connect today's God's Story Scripture to our lives?

The story of blind Bartimaeus is an intense story. When I picture this moment in my mind I see a large man yelling, from his core, for Jesus. He has got to meet Jesus. I hear in his voice the guttural cry the teeters on the verge of weeping, because he understands the only person who can help him is close by. Have you ever felt that deep of a desire to get to Jesus?

  • Sit in a quiet place and read the story again. Then close your eyes and imagine the scene unfolding before you. What catches your attention?
  • Say a prayer asking Jesus to kindle in you a desire for him.

How can we connnect today's story, God's Story scripture, and our story to others?

  • I love stories like Daniel's. They encourage me and remind me the excuses I sometimes use are weak. That's a good place to start a conversation, talk with a friend about the excuses you use to not do what you should.
  • Maybe you have friend who is feeling like they are out of options. You can point to the story of Bartimaeus. Here is a guy who needed something big to happen in his life and only one person could do it.
  • Still the best connection you can make is to live out a deep desire for Jesus in front of your friends.

Luke 23:44-49 (ESV)
The Death of Jesus

44 It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour, 45while the sun’s light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!" And having said this he breathed his last. 47Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, saying, "Certainly this man was innocent!" 48And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home beating their breasts. 49And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance watching these things.

Acts 1:6-11 (ESV)
The Ascension
6So when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?" 7He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." 9And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11and said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven."

Revelation 22:6-21 (ESV)
Jesus Is Coming

6And he said to me, "These words are trustworthy and true. And the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, has sent his angel to show his servants what must soon take place."
7"And behold, I am coming soon. Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book."

8I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me, 9 but he said to me, "You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God."

10And he said to me, "Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is near. 11 Let the evildoer still do evil, and the filthy still be filthy, and the righteous still do right, and the holy still be holy."

12"Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay everyone for what he has done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end."

14Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates. 15 Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and the sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

16 "I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star."

17The Spirit and the Bride say, "Come." And let the one who hears say, "Come." And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.

18I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, 19and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.

20He who testifies to these things says, "Surely I am coming soon." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!

21The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.
What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about the Last Word?
Have you ever given much thought to Jesus' last words when he was here on earth? There aren't many occassions in history when someone had multiple times to share Last Words, but Jesus did.
He shared his last words on the cross, when, after saying several things, he committed his spirit into his Father's hands. How he died made such an impact on one of the soldiers there at the crucifixion that he said, "Surely this was God's Son." Jesus' last words had a lasting impact on that soldier.
Then, after Jesus appeared to his disciples many times in the next several days, it was time for him to return to heaven. But before he did, he left another set of Last Words with his followers. This time he told them the they would tell the whole world about him. Jesus' last words had an impact on his followers that would impact the world.
Finally, at the end of John's Revelation, Jesus has one more set of last words. This time, Jesus tells John to write of His eventual return.  In his Last Last Words, Jesus says he's coming back someday to complete the plan by ushering in eternity ... Forever ... Where there will never be another Last Word ... Ever!

How can I connect today's God's Story to My Life?
  • Read through each of the sections of God's Story from today's DailyBide. Take a close look at the scenes leading up to each set of Jesus'Last Words.
  • Thank God today for Him making it possible that there really are no Last Last words.

How can I connect Today's Story, God's Story, and My Story with Others?
If you knew that today was your last day on this earth, how would that change what you said to your friends and family?  Would it change anything at all?  Would it change everything?  Try letting  your conversations today be as rich and meaningful as they would be if you knew they were your last ones with each of your friends.

Kind to the Needy

Poorest poor in US hits new record: 1 in 15 people
WASHINGTON (AP) — The ranks of America's poorest poor have climbed to a record high — 1 in 15 people — spread widely across metropolitan areas as the housing bust pushed many inner-city poor into suburbs and other outlying places and shriveled jobs and income.
New census data paint a stark portrait of the nation's haves and have-nots at a time when unemployment remains persistently high. It comes a week before the government releases first-ever economic data that will show more Hispanics, elderly and working-age poor have fallen into poverty.
In all, the numbers underscore the breadth and scope by which the downturn has reached further into mainstream America.
"There now really is no unaffected group, except maybe the very top income earners," said Robert Moffitt, a professor of economics at Johns Hopkins University. "Recessions are supposed to be temporary, and when it's over, everything returns to where it was before. But the worry now is that the downturn — which will end eventually — will have long-lasting effects on families who lose jobs, become worse off and can't recover."

Proverbs 14:30-32 (NIV)
30 A heart at peace gives life to the body,
   but envy rots the bones.

31 Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker,
but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.

32 When calamity comes, the wicked are brought down,
but even in death the righteous seek refuge in God.
What Does God's Story scripture Teach Us About our being Kind to the Needy?
When you think about the poor what images come to mind? Are they images of Americans or of Third World Countries? Today's Story is most likely very surprising to a lot of folks who are reading this today. We don't think about America when we think about poverty. Not before now that is.  Perhaps the time has come that this changes.
Today's God's Story scripture warns those who "oppress the poor" are actually showing contempt for "their Maker." What does it mean to "show contempt"? Dictionary.com defines contempt as "the feeling with which a person regards anything considered worthless." What goes through your mind when you see a lady collecting money on the exit ramp of the interstate? Do you see her as worthless? What do you think of the man who stretches a raggedy sleeping bag out under an overpass night after night? Many have resorted to a homeless lifestyle because of their financial circumstances. One out of every fifteen people in our own county are now considered the poorest of the poor. How will you make a difference?
Today's God's Story scripture also says that those who are "kind to the needy" are actually honoring God. It's your choice.  I'm thinking honoring God has a much better ring to it that showing contempt.

How can I connect today's God's Story Scripture to My Life?
Spend some time praying for the poor in your community this weekend.
Ask God to reveal to you what your heart really feels toward those who are less fortunate than you.

Do you have a homeless shelter in your community? Talk with the leaders of your campus ministry or your local church about ideas to serve the poor as we enter the Thanksgiving and Christmas season.
Come up with a list of the many ways you could serve others this fall. Now share that list wiih someone an let them hold you accountable to folllowing thoguh

Live Deeper

A Tale of Two Glasses of Water

As I drove home from church last night I began thinking about the teenagers I work with. I started considering the choices that they make on a regular basis and my heart broke. So many of them live such shallow lives. Their life consist of moving from one pleasure to the next because they can find nothing to satisfy them. As their faces and names flashed in my minds eye I devised a simple (I'm sure flawed) parable.

A man stood on the edge of a desert holding a single glass of water. As he stood watching the horizon another man, nearly dead, crawled over the top of a near by dune. The man with the glass ran to the dying man knowing the cup in his hand contained the life saver. When the man with water reached the desert man he was astounded to find the dying man refused to accept more than a thimble full of water. The man with the glass urged him to take it all so his life might be saved. The dying man said, "I only want he enough to wet my lips and then continue further in my journey." The man with the glass replied, "If you will drink all the water I have your life will be saved." The man from the desert again said he wanted only to keep moving in the life he already had. "You are barely alive," came the response. The dying man said, "At least I am not completely dead." Saddened the man with the water glass sat down his glass in front of the dying man and walked away to get a new glass and maybe be able to offer the life saving water to another.

2 Timothy 4:3-5

New International Version (NIV)

3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.

What does God's Story scripture teach us about how people will treat the offering of a deeper life?

Paul wrote this letter to Timothy for a few reasons. Foremost in my mind was because of his concern for the church during this time. The church was under much duress and they needed encouraged and reminded of the Gospel. Paul was also offering instruction to Timothy to, persevere, keep preaching and be ready to suffer if need called for it.

At this point in Paul's letter he is encouraging Timothy to stand his ground against a world that is shallow. People didn't want to hear about a deeper life they wanted to live from pleasure to pleasure. Anyone who stood for a deeper life was in the way and needed pushed aside. Timothy was to plant his feet and not get swept away by the tide of those not putting up with sound doctrine.

How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?

You and I live in a world that, in a lot of ways, is similar to Timothy's... We are surrounded on all sides by people who want to be told what they want to hear. They don't want to hear that there is a deeper life then the one they are choosing to live. They don't want to be told that there is right and wrong in life. So we must cling to Paul's wisdom and stand firm. Here are a few ideas to help you along the way:

  • Memorize 2 Timothy 4:3-5
  • Look for people to encourage you and people you can encourage. (Like Paul and Timothy did for each other.)
  • Decide to live the deepest life you can and then start searching the scriptures for how to do that.

How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture, and our story to others?

When I think about the parable I wrote my heartbreaks at the number of young people I know that live like the dying man. The water of life is right in front of them, but they refuse to drink it because they think their life is fine. They feel like they don't need more life than they have. We can't really force them to drink we can only set the glass in front of them and hope they will wise up enough to find new life. In the mean time there are somethings we can do...

  • Stand firm... Your life might be the best chance your friends have of seeing Jesus. Live in such a way that He is obvious in you.
  • Keep offering water... You can't force your friends to accept Jesus and you shouldn't try (it's God's responsiblity), but it is okay to offer them living water. "Hey, wanna go with me to Campus Life?" "Will you go with me to my youth group's event?"
  • Sometimes you have no other choice than to set the glass down in front of a friend and walk away. "This is Jesus, I've showed you all I can, now you have to decide how you will respond my friend."

Love Beyond 72 Days

Kim Kardashian & Kris Humphries are getting a divorce after 72 days

(2 months).

The couple were wed in a star-studded, TV ceremony in August, but the "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" star said the couple were now splitting due to "irreconcilable differences".

"I hope everyone understands this was not an easy decision," Kardashian said in a statement.

"I had hoped this marriage was forever but sometimes things don't work out as planned."

Article courtesy of Yahoo news, Image from Google images

"Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love

and his wonderful deeds for men, for he satisfies the thirsty

and fills the hungry with good things."

Psalm 107: 8-9

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about changed lives?

Lets give thanks to the lord for loving us, & putting up with our crazy inconsistent lives. Lets give thanks to the Lord for Loving us with His UNFAILING LOVE that lasts more than 72 DAYS!! Wow if from the day we accepted Christ into our lives and we counted until day 72. If God said on day 72, "I had hoped this was forever but..." like Kim did, I am not sure where my life would be today. Praise God that he indeed loves us, greater love than we can ever imagine.

Failed love has become normal...Yet God's love is talked about over and over in scripture. I will leave you with these verses because they say more about his REAL LOVE than I ever can.

"His Love endures forever" Psalm 118:2

"We love because he first loved us" 1 John 4:19

"The Lord loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love" Psalm 33:5

"May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in you." Psalm 33:22

"Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies." Psalm 36:5

"How priceless is your unfailing love! Both High and low among men find refuge in the shadow of your wings." Psalm 36:7

"Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you" Psalms 63:3

How can I connect today's God's Story to my life?

Your world is full of numerous examples of failed love. It’s extremely difficult to actually come across an example in our society of true love. It becomes so hard to find Love that has not failed, even I begin to question, "How can God's love be Unfailing?" Love that we see today, seems to be all intangible, that is if we look to Hollywood and others first. Even though I have been a Christian for over 25 years, I have to remind myself of the times I have seen Jesus' Love and Faithfulness in my life. When I take time to remind myself I become overwhelmed by His great love, I even can feel unworthy.

Know this, YOU are WORTHY of God's UNFAILING LOVE!

God will never leave you or forsake you (Hebrews 13:5b)!

Take time this week to separate yourself from the human display of love (I know its not easy). As you move away from the human side of love, take time to listen to what God has to say in the verses I have given you.

  • Write out on a paper, on your mirror, on your binder a verse talking about Gods unfailing love.
  • Ask God to remind you of His love for you in your life.
  • Take time and write THANKS to the Lord about his Unfailing Love in your life.

How can I connect Today's Story, God's Story, & My Story with others?

Lets be honest this story broke on Halloween and I am sure this was a topic over milky ways, kit kat's, and peanut butter cups. You may be tired of the drama from the Kardashian's, yet I hope you and your friends understand that REAL love does exist. Ask your friends what they think about Love?

  • Ask if they believe in true love?
  • Ask them is they would want a love that would never fail?

If the conversation leads, share about how you may not fully understand but you know that God has unfailing love for you, and your friends.
