The Meaning of Advent

This week marks the beginning of the Advent season, a time traditionally set apart by Christians to prepare for the celebration of Christmas.

For many of us, Advent means little more than a candle-lighting at church, or maybe the opening of a cardboard calendar with a chocolate treat for each day of December. But here's some things you might not know about Advent:

  • Advent means "coming."
  • Traditionally, advent was a time of waiting and fasting. (kind of the opposite of the parties & feasting that occur these days!)
  • The advent candles are usually purple for the first two Sundays to represent our need to repent. The pink candle represents joy for the coming Savior.
  • Advent is about both celebrating Christ's birth, and acknowledging that we wait in anticipation of Christ's return.

Isaiah 9:6
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Romans 8:23-25
23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.

What does today's God's story scripture teach me about the Christmas season?

Black Friday. Cyber Monday. Tacky Light Tours. It seems like the month of December can be about anything BUT Jesus. Yet for centuries, the church has practiced the season of Advent, a reminder of the true meaning of Christmas.

The prophet Isaiah waited for a Messiah. Written centuries before Jesus' birth, the book of Isaiah gives specific information about who this Jesus would be. And all of those prophecies came true!

Advent isn't just about remembering the waiting time before Jesus' birth. It's also a reminder of the waiting we continue to do. Jesus promised that he would come again and establish a new heaven and earth. The Christmas season is also about remembering that this life we live is NOT the end. God has offered us eternal life through the person of Jesus, and we have so much more to look forward to beyond this life!

How can I connect today's God's story scripture to my life?

  • So often, we think more about the "here and now" concerns of daily life than about taking time to marvel at how big God truly is. Advent is a chance to remember that there is so much more to hope and wait for!
  • Advent is traditionally a time of repentance and fasting. Take time today to ask God to forgive you not putting him first in your heart. Repentance leads to gratitude--and knowing how much you need Jesus helps you to celebrate that he came and what he did for each of us!

How can I connect today's God's Story Scripture and my story to others?

  • Many people are familiar with Christmas passages from attending church around this time. Having more context and background to the story, such as about Isaiah, is something you can share with others to breathe life into the familiar story.
  • Read Isaiah 40 and Isaiah 53 to locate some of the other prophesies about what Christ would do.
  • Step out and invite a friend to a church or youth event this season!

Not Perfect After All!

Boise State drops 6 spots to No. 9 in AP poll

NEW YORK – Boise State dropped six spots to No. 9 in The Associated Press college football poll after having its 24-game winning streak snapped.

For the third straight week, No. 1 Oregon and Auburn hold the top two spots in the rankings. No. 3 TCU moved up one spot.

The gap between the Ducks and Tigers shrank to 19 points. The Ducks have 36 first-place votes and 1,475 points, while Auburn has 23 and 1,456 from the media panel.

Wisconsin is fourth and Stanford is fifth.

Boise State had been ranked no lower than fourth this season, but after losing 34-31 in overtime to Nevada, the Broncos tumbled out of the national championship race.

Nevada moved up five spots to No. 14.

Philippians 3:12-14 (NLT)

Pressing toward the Goal
12 I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. 13 No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about perfection?

If anyone had a reason to boast about their perfection in the last few years of college football it was the Boise State Broncos.  Until this past Friday, the Broncos had not lost a regular season game since 2005.  Friday's loss knocked them out of any chance to play for the National Championship in January.

If anyone had a reason to boast about their perfection in the first century church it was Paul. Earlier in Philippians 3, Paul lists all that he has done for which he could boast (vs. 5-6).  But in spite of all of his accomplishments, he goes on to say this in verses 7-11 ...

7 I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. 8 Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ 9 and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith. 10 I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I want to suffer with him, sharing in his death, 11 so that one way or another I will experience the resurrection from the dead!

Only Jesus makes us perfect!

How can I connect today's God's Story scripture to My Life?

  • Do you ever struggle with a desire to be a "perfect Christian?"  Ask God to change your way of thinking this week.  Ask Him to continue to work in your life by perfecting you with His Spirit, rather than your efforts.
  • Do you sometimes feel like you just aren't perfect enough in the eyes of others?  Ask God to remind you each day this week that you are made perfect in Jesus.

How can I connect Today's Story, My Story, and God's Story to Others?

  • Do you know someone who tends to boast about all they do for God?  Talk with them privately about Paul's words to us in Philippians.
  • Do you know someone who tends to feel less than perfect in the eyes of others?  Talk with them privately this week about what it means to find our perfection in Jesus.

Thankful for New Life!

Chris Henry's Legacy

On December 16, 2009 Chris Henry suffered fatal injuries after falling from a moving vehicle. In the wake of the tragedy, Henry's mother decided to donate his organs. Click Here for The NFL Today's heartwarming story presented on Thanksgiving Day.

Romans 6:3-5 (NLT)

3 Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death? 4 For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.

5 Since we have been united with him in his death, we will also be raised to life as he was.

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about new life?
The recipients of Chris Henry's organs were given a "second chance at life" in Today's Story.  But a relationship with Jesus gives us new life for an eternity.  As we continue in this Thanksgiving weekend, take some time to thank God for that new life.
How can I connect today's God's Story scripture to My Life?
Thank God today for the new life you have in a relationship with Jesus.
How can I connect Today's Story, My Story, and God's Story to Others?
As you continue to spend time with friends and family over this Thanksgiving weekend, take the opportunity to share your thankfulness for your new life in Christ with others.  There is nothing better to be thankful for.

Because It's More Than Just Words

Overworked Mom Gets Attitude, Not Help

Dear Abby: I spent last Thanksgiving weekend with tears streaming down my face. Both my adult daughters spent the holiday with us.  I served dinner to more than 20 people and got no help cleaning up until Friday morning when I had a meltdown and demanded some. Then my older daughter said, "Sorry," in a sarcastic tone, and my younger daughter responded with, "Anybody mind if I take a shower now?" (My husband works third shift and helps me as much as he can.)

I spent all that day loading and unloading the dishwasher, and putting things back where they belong. My daughters spent the day shopping, visiting friends and watching TV.  I have spent my life trying to make holidays special for my daughters so they would have happy childhood memories. All my hard work seems to have backfired. Instead of wanting to participate in making these memories happen, they have developed a sense of entitlement - as if I am obligated to do everything.

(Read the full letter and response at www.amarillo.com, Nov. 24, 2008)

How are you entering your thanksgiving holiday? Are you thankful for what your family does for you? Are you eager to pitch in and make the experience the best it can be for everyone? Most importantly, are you thankful to God for who he is and what he has done in your life?

Psalm 100 (The Message)

A Thanksgiving Psalm

1-2 On your feet now—applaud God! Bring a gift of laughter,
      sing yourselves into his presence.

3 Know this: God is God, and God, God.
He made us; we didn't make him.
We're his people, his well-tended sheep.

4 Enter with the password: "Thank you!"
Make yourselves at home, talking praise.
      Thank him. Worship him.

5 For God is sheer beauty,
      all-generous in love,
      loyal always and ever.

What does today's story and God's Story scripture teach us about having and showing a thankful heart?

I love this translation of what is known as the "Thanksgiving Psalm." The Hebrew name for God, Yahweh, or Jehovah was the most sacred name for God. If we took the time to stop and recognize him for who he really is, we would never take Him for granted (the way so many of us do our moms!), or say "sorry" in a sarcastic tone when He asks us to do something. Instead we would:
    •    give Him a standing ovation (vs. 1)
    •    laugh - life is FUN! (vs. 2)
    •    sing out our praise (vs. 2)
    •    know this: HE is God, and we aren't! (vs. 3)
    •    start our prayers with "thank you" (vs. 4)
    •    be "at home" when we praise God (vs. 4)
    •    remember that God is amazing (vs. 5)

How can i connect today's story and God's Story scripture to my life?

How about you? Are you ready to put some THANKS into your Thanksgiving, and into your life? Would starting every prayer with "thanks" help you appreciate what you have more, and give you a better perspective on the challenges God has put before you?  I love the idea of "enter[ing] with the password: 'thank you.'" What if, every time you forgot to start your prayer with thanks, God interrupted and asked, "Password?"

Sometimes I think we are guilty of approaching God with an attitude of entitlement, much like the daughters in the "Dear Abby" letter; we feel like God is somehow obligated to give us what we want. While we feel at home being waited on, the Psalm tells us to "make yourselves at home, talking praise."

As you visit and celebrate Thanksgiving with your family and friends, and you reflect on the things for which you are thankful, remember to give praise to the One to whom all praise is due.  Enter with the password, "thank you," then settle in, and make yourself at home praising God.

How can I connect today's story, God's Story, and my story to others?

We live in uncertain times. The headlines are far more negative than positive.  Despite all that we have here in the United States, there are very few news articles about our countless blessings, and you'll be hard-pressed to find any that give God the glory and praise!  It's like a breath of fresh air when you hear a story of someone who is willing to go all-out to say thanks to another person for what they've done, or to find out that people are "paying it forward."  Imagine how influential you can be in the lives of those around you if you are often heard speaking words of thanksgiving and praise, rather than the typical words of discouragment and negativity.

Being positive can be very contagious.  Decide today to be a positive influence in those around you, reminding them of all they have to be thankful for.  Take every opportunity to share what God is doing in your life as well as all the ways He is so worthy of praise!  As you do, your friends will be attracted to the Jesus you follow, and, Lord willing, they will decide to follow Jesus themselves, giving you great reason to celebrate and give thanks to God!

Happy Thanksgiving!

When It Burns

Have you ever burned yourself? I once burned my hand on the oven rack while pulling out a pizza. Not only did it hurt right then, it continued to throb and sting for days afterward. In just one careless moment, I managed to suffer long-term consequences, including a scar that lasted for years!

Have you ever been "burned" by someone else? Whether by a careless word or a thoughtless action, one moment can sting us for a long time.

Have you ever "burned" someone? Ever said something you wish you could take back or done something that you regret?

All of these examples have one thing in common: the consequences last much longer than the action itself. So what do we do about burns?

The tongue is a small member, but it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

James 3:5-6

Out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks.

Matthew 12:34

What does God's Story Scripture teach us about burns?

James 3 talks about the power of our speech. Careless words can burn. Once words leave our mouths, we can't take them back. Often, they burn far beyond what we would intend. Like when I burned my hand in the oven, the sting won't go away even after the moment.

We've all experienced the burn of other's words. So it's crucial that we guard our own words to avoid burning others.

How can I connect God's story scripture to my life?

  • Do you watch your words? Do you tend to be careless with what you say? If so, ask God for strength to hold your tongue and choose your words lovingly.
  • How is your heart? When your heart has anger or unforgiveness or hurt in it, we often speak out of that place. Perhaps you need to ask God to help you forgive someone for previous hurts so that you don't speak out of the overflow of a sinful heart.

How can I connect God's story scripture and my story to others?

  • Have you been burned by someone's words? It might be time to let them off the hook. Forgive them by praying for them and asking God to help you let it go.
  • Have you burned someone? If you know you've hurt someone with your words this week, go to them and ask forgiveness. You might want to apologize for your careless words and let them know you are working on speaking more lovingly.
  • Out of the heart, the mouth speaks....it can also help to remember that you can use your mouth for good. Speak a kind or encouraging word to a member of your family or a friend this week. A kind word can be like a healing balm on a burn!

Adopted!

According to international news sites, November 20 is a National Adoption Day in the United States.

Eighteen children from Haiti, China, Ethiopia and other countries were sworn in as US citizens in New York City on November 18. Their adoptive American parents were very proud of them as they were sworn in.

Jillian [pictured here], 4, is one of them. She was originally from China. She was adopted by Eileen Kalerduring. On the picture ... she could be seen holding an American flag during a ceremony at the US Citizenship and Immigration Services office in New York. She is now a naturalized US citizen.

Kids all over the world need families that will love them. Reports said that in the US alone, almost 500,000 are in foster care in any given day. About 100,000 of these kids are available for adoption.

Story and Photo found at news.yahoo.com.

Galatians 4:4-7 (ESV)
4But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" 7So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about  adoption?

Just like those children are now citizens of the United States, those who follow Jesus have been adopted by God and have their citizenship in heaven.

Under Roman law, an adopted child was guaranteed all legal rights to his father's property, even if he was formerly a slave.  He was not a second-class son; he was equal to all other sons, biological or adopted, in his father's family.  As adopted children of God, we share with Jesus all rights to God's resources.  As God's heirs, we can claim what he has provided for us - our full identity as his children. (Tyndale's Life Application Study Bible Notes)

How can I connect today's God's Story scripture to My Life?

  • Thank God for adopting you as his own child today, for giving you new life!
  • Are you holding on to something from your old life?  Is it time to let go of whatever that might be?  Ask God to help you forgive and forget your own sin, just like He has.

How can I connect Today's Story, My Story, and God's Story to Others?

  • Do you have a friend who has been adopted?  Talk with them today about their adoption process.
  • Allow that conversation to point you toward talking about God's Story and His desire to adopt "lost" children as his own.

What's the Real Story?

When you see the picture below, what comes to mind?

Obviously, it's a castle.  But don't you find yourself wanting to know more?
Where is it?
How old is it?
Who lived there?

The answers might surprise you ...

The castle has been a Central Kentucky curiosity for more than 40 years.

Lexington contractor Rex Martin Sr. started building the castle in 1969, but it sat unfinished and empty for decades.

Then a Miami lawyer and a graduate of Lexington's Lafayette High School and the University of Kentucky, bought it for $1.8 million in 2003. While it was being restored, a May 2004 fire burned the house.

In 2008, it opened as The CastlePost, a luxury bed-and-breakfast, to guests, who could make use of a swimming pool, tennis court and grand ballroom. It has 16 rooms for overnight guests that range in price from $325 a day for the State Room to $1,250 a day for each of the four "Royal Turret Suites."

Story excerpt from kentucky.com, Nov. 5, 2010.

John 4:16-26
16Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come here." 17The woman answered him, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You are right in saying, 'I have no husband'; 18for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true." 19The woman said to him, "Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship." 21Jesus said to her,  "Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." 25The woman said to him, "I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things." 26Jesus said to her, "I who speak to you am he."
What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about knowing the real story?
In today's story, most everyone probably assumed a story very different from the real story behind that castle.  In all honesty, there is even more to the story.  I attended college not far from that Kentucky castle.  There were many rumors that circulated over the years of the famous people who owned the castle.  Then one day, the real story was discovered.  The man who built it, built it for his wife. Unfortunately, he became so consumed with the castle, the marriage fell apart, they divorced, and the castle sat empty for years.  Sometimes, nothing is as it seems.

In today's God's Story scripture, there was an element of surprise going on between the woman at the well and Jesus.  The woman was surprised that Jesus would even give her the time of day because she was a woman, and she was from Samaria.  It was probably running through her mind that she was thankful he didn't know her whole story.  BUT HE DID!  And it didn't matter, he still accepted her and loved her unconditionally.
How can I connect today's God's Story scripture to My Life?
Jesus knows your whole story!  Even when we try to hide what's really going on in our lives behind the walls we build, Jesus knows.  And he loves us just the same.  Take some time this weekend to sit quietly with Jesus and talk about your story with Him.  Be sensitive to the Holy Spirit as He points out what areas of your life you might be trying to hide.  Thank Jesus for his constant presence in your life.

How can I connect Today's Story, My Story, and God's Story to Others?
Do you have some friends in your life who are trying to hide the real story of what's happening in their lives?
Maybe it's someone whose family is a mess and they are afraid to admit it.
Maybe it's someone who has allowed a relationship with someone to become unhealthy.
Maybe it's someone who is pretending to have a close relationship with Jesus, but the real truth is, they don't really understand what that means.
Take some time this weekend to pray for those friends.  Spend some time with them, and when it's appropriate, let them know you know the real story.  When they see that you accept them in the midst of their messed up lives, they will get a taste of what it's like knowing that God accepts them, and loves them, for who they are.

Sin Stinks!

For 10 months, the woman drove around with a corpse in her car. She never contacted police or tried to find the dead person’s relatives. Instead, as the body began to decompose, she spread baking soda on the floorboards to mask the smell.  It may sound like a late Halloween story but the case of the Southern California real-estate agent and the mummified body of a woman found in her car is real, if macabre.

“I’ve been doing this job for 25 years… and I’ve handled a lot of suspicious deaths. But this is definitely a first,” said Mike Cohen, a homicide detective with the police department in Costa Mesa. The officer was called to remove a car parked illegally in a driveway in a bucolic neighborhood of low-slung houses and tree-lined streets. But as he approached the sedan—a 1997 Mercury Marquis—he was overwhelmed by a horrific stench. Peering inside, he saw the mummified remains of a woman sitting upright in the passenger seat of the car, half-covered with a pile of women’s shirts and jackets.

The real-estate agent had met the other woman in a park in a neighboring town, and had taken pity on her, because she was homeless, she told police. She clothed the woman, gave her food, and allowed her to sleep in her car at night for safety. It was unclear, police said, how long the two women had known each other, but the real-estate agent claimed she didn’t know the homeless woman’s name.

One morning, the real-estate agent went out to her car and found the homeless woman dead in the passenger seat. But instead of reporting her discovery to authorities, she carried on using the car—unbothered, she told police, by the smell. Detectives have identified the dead woman as Signe Margit, a 59-year-old former teacher from Laguna Hills, reported missing by her family after she stopped contacting them in December 2009. By the time she ended up on a slab at the coroner’s office, she weighed less than 30 pounds.

  Excerpts from John 11:17-45 (NIV)

On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home. “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.  But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”  Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”  Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”  When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”    When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled.  "'""""Where have you laid him?” he asked. “Come and see, Lord,” they replied.  Jesus wept.  Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”    Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.  “Take away the stone,” he said. “But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”   Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?”

So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me.  I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.."  When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”  The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face.   Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”
What does today’s Scripture Story teach us about death stinking?

It doesn’t take long for a dead body to smell.  And it’s almost impossible to hide the smell of death.  Martha warned Jesus that her brother was going to smell because he had been in the grave for four days.  I believe that as soon as Jesus called Lazarus’ name, he lost the scent of death.  There wasn’t a need for Febreeze® or Axe Body Wash® ~ he had been given a total and complete makeover.
How can we connect today’s God’s Story scripture to our lives?

Romans 6:23 says for the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Disobedience and sin are not pleasant odors to God.  We can’t get rid of the stench on our own.  We can act like we’re not sinning and pretend that everything is ok between us and the Lord, but eventually others will see, or most likely smell, that something is rotten.  It’s only through Jesus that we can get rid of our death (sin) clothes and the smell of sin.
How can we connect today’s story, God’s Story scripture, and our story to others?

  • Do you have any un-confessed sin in your life?  Don’t let the smell continue.  Air your dirty laundry to the Lord and let Him bring you back to life!
  • Can you imagine driving around with a dead body in your car?  The next time you’re in a car with a friend, tell them today’s story about the dead body in the car.  Let them know that the all powerful Savior, your Savior, raised Lazarus from the dead by showing them the scripture of John 11.
  • Tell them how God took away the sin (and stench) of your past and how He’s still working with you.
  • Pray for those who are still dead in sin and who need to acknowledge Jesus and listen to His voice….just like Lazarus.

Life Is a Battlefield

Staff Sargeant Salvatore Giunta became the first living man to earn the highest military honor, the Medal of Honor, on Tuesday.  President Obama proudly placed the medal on Giunta's neck in a ceremony at the White House, honoring him for the way in which the soldier placed his own life on the line in an effort to rescue his fellow soldiers from the enemy.

. . . Giunta "exposed himself to withering enemy fire," his medal citation said, to pull a comrade back to cover when a Taliban ambush in Afghanistan split up his squad.  Later, while trying to link up with the rest of his squad, Giunta noticed two insurgents carrying away a fellow soldier.

"He immediately engaged the enemy, killing one and wounding the other (and provided) medical aid as his squad caught up and provided security," the citation said.

. . . The Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force that can be given to an individual in the U.S. Army.

Psalm 18:16-18

He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters.  He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me.  They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the Lord was my support.

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about being rescued?

Today's scripture is a Psalm of David.  He wrote it in response to the way in which God rescued him from the hands of his enemies, and specifically from Saul.  Of all people, David knew what it meant to be pursued and captured by his enemies, to battle them, to be betrayed by those he thouht were his friends.  Earlier in the chapter, David describes his situation just before God rescued him:  (vv. 4-5) "The cords of death entangled me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.  The cords of the grave coiled around me; the snares of death confronted me." Can you imagine being in David's shoes?  I imagine there were times when he thought, "This is it!  Surely this will be the end!"  But praise God, He had other plans!  Because then comes the dramatic rescue . . . then comes the rest of the story!

How can I connect today's story and God's Story scripture to my life?

Although you may not find yourself in fatigues and physically fighting a visible enemy, dodging bullets and diving into trenches, as Christians, we have a very real enemy and you fight battles, daily.  Think for a moment about what kind of battles you find yourself in currently.  Some battles that you may face include: laziness or busyness, food or substance addictions, language (the things you say/don't say), money and greed, jealousy, anger, bitterness.  What is it in your life that the enemy is targeting and using to gain a tighter hold on your life?   The Bible says that our enemy, the devil, is seeking to destroy us - he wants to use whatever he can to capture you and pull you away from God.

- Take some time this week to really face your battles.  No matter where you are in them (losing or winning), remind yourself that God is there to rescue you, daily!  He wants to be your support and your stronghold and he will never shy away from swooping in and reclaiming you right out of satan's grasp! Get honest with God, confess the things that battle for your attentions and ask God to rescue you from them.  Our God is the Great Overcomer (Jn. 16:33)!

How can I connect today's story, God's Story scripture, and my story to others?

Have you ever found yourself in Giunta's position, horrified to look up and see the enemy (Satan) running the other direction with your friends in tow?  Surely we can all come up with people right now who we know are being carried away (however slowly) by the Enemy.  Some of them don't even realize it and they need us to be willing to risk it all in an effort to save them.  Ultimately, we know that God is the One who does the rescuing - only He can change hearts and save the souls of our friends - but we've been armed with a couple mighty weapons: (the Word and The Holy Spirit) and God wants to use us in the lives of our friends!

Here are a few things you can do to help a friend battle the Enemy:

- Pray for opportunities to speak to your friends about the directions you see them heading; let them know you are concerned and that you care.  Pray for each one by name.  When God does give you the opportunity to say something, don't let it pass you by!  Take a risk!  The deeper you let your friends get into "enemy territory," the harder it is to bring them out.

-If you see a friend battling anything that is illegal or life-threatening tell a trusted adult who can help the situation.

- Talk to your friends about what Giunta did for his friends and ask them if they would do the same.  Share how God has rescued you, in the midst of your battles (this may even be an opportunity for you to share how you came to know Christ).

Living Power

Reader's Choice Woman of the Year

photo and excerpt from Glamour.com, Glamour Magazine's website:

Earlier this year you nominated your real-life heroes, and then voted—in droves. Your winner? Courageous 17-year-old Kendall Ciesemier.

Ciesemier suffers from a rare liver disease and at age 11 was facing her second liver transplant. But she asked friends not to send gifts: “How many teddy bears do you really need?” Instead, having learned about AIDS orphans in Africa, she requested that well-wishers donate to World Vision, an international charity. “I couldn’t imagine living like that: grieving the death of your parents and having to [support] your younger siblings,” she says. That appeal raised $15,000, prompting her to start her own nonprofit, Kids Caring 4 Kids, which helps fund a girls’ dormitory in Kenya and meals for AIDS patients and orphans in Zambia. (Read Full Story at Glamour or Christianity Today and go to Kendall's website at KidsCaring4Kids.com)

2 Timothy 1:7

For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but of power, love and of self-discipline.

1 Peter 1:3

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

What does God's Story Scripture teach us about living power?

There is a power that lives in Kendall Ciesemier, that gives her purpose, strength and determination to change the world for kids with AIDS.

Do you know that when Christ lives in you, you have access to that same power?

It's easy to read a story like Kendall's and think "not me. That's one in a million." It's easy to think that Kendall lives by a different set of rules. Whether because of her liver transplant or her parents or her school, she's isn't like you.

But she's just like you.

She accesses the same power in her heart that you have in your heart. When you invite Christ into your heart, you invite in power that's beyond this world. Power to promote healing, bring hope, or pursue peace. 2 Timothy says that the spirit God DIDN'T give us is the spirit of timidity! Power. Love. Self-Discipline. The same power that raised Christ from the dead lives in you! Resurrection Power. Living Power. Power to live a different kind of life.

How can I connect today's God's Story Scripture to my life?

Try to memorize 2 Timothy 1:7.

Think about it as you go through your day. Where are you need more courage? What holds you back from being different, loving more? You might want to pray something like this:

God, I haven't been living in your resurrection power. Because of_______________ (what other people think, fear of failure, laziness, other....) I'm being held back. God, please hlep me to live by the spirit of power, love and of self-discipline.

How can I connect today's story, God's story, and my story to others?

  • Courage is contagious. Often, when we stand up for our faith, give someone grace, or choose to be friendly with the lonely, others will follow.
  • Do you have dreams of doing big things for God? Share them with someone else. We can be inspired by each other's desires to live with a spirit of power, love and self-discipline.

Forgiving Mistakes

"Garfield" creator apologizes for Veterans Day strip

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The creator of the widely syndicated comic "Garfield" has apologized for a strip that ran on Veterans Day that some critics saw as making fun of the holiday honoring those who served in the U.S. military.

Thursday's strip showed a spider warning the comic's featured cat, the lazy and overweight Garfield, that if the feline "squishes" him, an annual day of remembrance will be held in his honor.

Garfield, who frequently crushes spiders in the series, apparently is undeterred and the strip closes with a classroom of spiders being asked why they celebrate "National Stupid Day."

The cartoon drew such Internet comments as "Surely this isn't in the best of taste for Armistice Day/Veterans Day'' and that Garfield creator Jim Davis "is way off the mark with this cartoon. Shame on him."

Although some others said they doubted creator had such intentions or that they didn't read the strip the way the critics did, Davis issued a statement apologizing.

"Please accept my apologies for any offense today's Garfield may have created. It was unintentional and regrettable,"
the statement said.

It said the cartoon had been written almost a year previously and that Davis, who had a brother who served in Vietnam and a son who served in Afghanistan and Iraq as a Marine, had not known when it was going to appear.

The Garfield Website, http://garfield.com/, says the cartoon strip is the most widely syndicated in the world, according to Guinness World Records, and appears in more than 2,600 newspapers.

Luke 6:36-38 (ESV)

36 Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.
37 "Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; 38 give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you."

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about forgiving mistakes?

Talk about bad timing.  Jim Davis stated he had no idea that Garfield strip would run on Veteran's Day. It wasn't his fault.  Yet he had the wisdom to apologize, to ask forgiveness from those whom might have been offended.  Asking for forgiveness takes courage.  Sometimes we are totally at fault.  Other times, we may just be involved in the offense.  Either way, both asking for and offering forgiveness must become a fabic that is woven into our lives as followers of Jesus.

How can I connect today's God's Story scripture to My Life?

  • Thank God for the forgiveness He offers for our sin.
  • Ask God to make you merciful, as He is merciful.
  • Is there an area of your life where you struggle to accept God's forgiveness?  Ask God to help you in that area today.
  • Are you quick to admit your mistakes when you are wrong, or do you try to pass the blame?  Ask God to give you the courage to admit mistakes when they occur.

How can I connect Today's Story, My Story, and God's Story to Others?

Is there someone you need to forgive for a sin committed against you?  You can forgive someone, even without them asking.  Take some time to forgive that person today.  Go a step further and pray for them as well.

Enjoy the Evenings

Something was different around our part of the country this week.  Most likely you experienced it too.  If you live in an area of the US that observes Daylight Savings Time you know it came to an end last weekend.  It's now dark one hour earlier each night.

It might seem odd to most, but I prefer it this way.  It seems like dinner is a little more enjoyable after dark.  We are more relaxed.  Even in the midst of the stress of homework and projects and everything else that goes on each day with school and work, it's a little easier to reflect on the days work after dinner and enjoy the evenings.

Ecclesiastes 2:24-26 (NIV)

24 A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, 25 for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? 26 To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about enjoying life?

Check out what Tyndale's Life Application Study Bible says about today's God's Story scripture ...

Is Solomon recommending we make life a big, irresponsible party? No, he is encouraging us to take pleasure in what we're doing now and to enjoy life because it comes from God's hand.  True enjoyment in life comes only as we follow God's guidelines for living.  Without him, satisfaction is a lost search.  Those who really know how to enjoy life are the ones who take life each day as a gift from God, thanking him for it and serving him in it. Those without God will have no relief from toil and no direction to guide them through life's complications.

How can I connect today's God's Story scripture to My Life?

  • Are you enjoying life or are you consumed with life's complications? Take some time this weekend to remember all that God is doing in your life right now.
  • Thank him for each and every day you have to serve Him.
  • Consider spending one evening each week with Jesus.  Take a prayer-walk or spend it reading God's Story.
How can I connect Today's Story, My Story, and God's Story to Others?
  • As you find yourself spending time with friends this weekend, take some time to remember how God has blessed your life through your friendships with others.  Either while you are together or when you get home at night, thank God for each and every one of your closest friends by name.
  • Do you have a friend who seems to have "no direction to guide them through life's complications?"  Spend some time together this weekend and share today's God's Story scripture with them.  Tell them why you need Jesus in your life.

Soldier On.....

Veterans Day

Today’s Story

Veterans Day gives Americans the opportunity to celebrate the bravery and sacrifice of all U.S. veterans. Most Americans confuse this holiday with Memorial Day, reports the Department of Veterans Affairs.  It's imperative that all Americans know the history of Veterans Day so that we can honor our former service members properly.

Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918. In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress -- at the urging of the veterans service organizations -- amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, Nov. 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

What does today’s Scripture Story teach us about being a Soldier?

You probably know one.  It could be your mom or dad, brother, sister, grandfather or friend.  Someone who is or has been a soldier of the United States Military.

As followers of Christ, we are soldiers in the army of the Lord.  We have to fight daily against the attacks of our enemy, the Devil.  He is a real advisory and we have to be on guard and ready to fight him.  But it’s not all scary.  Did you see the promise in the scripture?  Our suffering won’t last forever.  We may have a few more battles to fight, but we know Who wins the war over evil.

How can we connect today’s God’s Story scripture to our lives?

Just as a soldier trains for battle, we must be vigilant by daily reading our Bible, spending time with the Lord in prayer and having quiet moments alone with Him.

Claim His promises – He will equip us for battle, if we do our part to follow His instructions (from the Bible).

How can we connect today’s story, God’s Story scripture, and our story to others?
  • Pray for those who are currently serving in our military all over the world.
  • Remember and thank those who have served in the past to provide our freedoms.
  • Remind your Christian friends that they are in a battle against Satan.  Let them know that you are praying for them to be strong.
  • Live your life so that others can see Christ’s Light shining through as you serve Him.

Galatians 5:16-19 (NLT)

So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses. When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures

What does today's God's Story scripture the scripture teach us about media in today's culture and its influence in our lives?

In today's passage, Paul gets real specific with sensual sins. OUCH!  Every one of us struggle with evil desires. We can't ignore them. Most of them won't be noticed by others, but we all know that deep down, there's some pretty ungodly stuff being tossed around.  Paul says that if we're not letting the Holy Spirit control every part of our lives, our sinful nature is going to produce some sinful desires and result in evil.

You may not be sexually active now, but if you allow your mind to be continually filled with impure values, doesn't it seem logical that in time you could become eager for lustful pleasures? Will you then have the strength to say no to sexual immorality?

If you are struggling with sensual sin, do you see the connection between what you are putting into your mind with what you are doing?

If we allow the Holy Spirit to control our minds, we will experience God's power to make Godly choices about what goes into our minds and hearts. If we don't, would we want anyone to see our TOP TEN thoughts?

How can we connect today's Top 10 List and today's God's Story scripture with our lives?

  • Start by making your own Top 10 list - list your favorite songs, movies, tv shows, videos, the top 10 songs played on your iPod, etc.  Look over your lists and be honest with yourself, consider the connection between the media going into your head and your attitude, thoughts and actions.
  • Thank God for the power of His Holy Spirit to live a life that pleases Him. Confess your struggle with choosing to fill your thoughts with what is Godly and ungodly. Ask His Spirit to control your mind today, for an hour, or maybe just for the next minute! Thank Jesus that He promises you to be able to do with what is pleasing to your Heavenly Father when you abide in Him.
  • Memorize Galatians 5:16.
  • For one week, read today's scripture every day, slowly and aloud. Listen for some new thoughts and encouragement from Jesus.
  • For two weeks, keep a written journal of what goes into your mind from the media...your choices in movies, TV shows, magazines, music, video games, the Internet, and the Godly stuff....like time in His Word, prayer, worship, Bible studies at church or with friends at school or the work place, a Christian book, etc. At the end of the two weeks, evaluate which is having more impact on your mind? Make any needed adjustments.

How can we connect today's Top 10 List, God's Story, and our story to others?

  • With friends and family who are followers of Jesus, look at the hot lists together and talk about the connection to Galatians 5:16-19.
  • With friends and family who are not followers of Jesus, be careful not to preach at them or judge them for their media choices. Rather, be familiar with today's media, because this is part of knowing how to connect God's Story to their stories. You don't have to see all the movies or hear all the songs to know what's going on. Check out these resources: 3story.org; planetwisdom.com; cpyu.org; dare2share.org;
  • With the mind of Christ in you and a growing understanding of God's Story, you can listen to the media perspectives and experiences of those who need Jesus and find those moments to convey spiritual truth in a loving, thought-provoking way. This is part of connecting your story and God's Story to their stories.

A Different Kind of Peace

Think for a second about a place you find really peaceful.

What does it look like? What does it feel like? How do you feel after you've been there?

One of my favorite peaceful places is the beach. I love sitting in the sand, barefooted, with my journal and my Bible, staring out into the waves and thinking deep thoughts.

Until I figure out that the sand is wet under my seat.

Or my neck cramps up from looking down at my journal.

Or the sunshine is so bright I can't read my bible without squinting....

Eventually even my "peaceful" place doesn't give me the feeling I'm looking for. Most of the time, I think the kind of peace the Bible talks about is the same way--it might work for a little while, but then the stress just comes right back.

But what if the kind of peace God gives is completely different?

"For he [Jesus] himself is our peace..." Ephesians 2:14

"Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way."  2 Thessalonians 3:16

"Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace."

Colossians 3:15

The bible talks about peace as something that has nothing to do with circumstances. Paul, the writer of much of the New Testament, spoke often about peace--and his life was anything BUT peaceful! In 2 Corinthians, Paul tells us about the many trials he faced in his desire to share Christ--beatings, imprisonment, shipwrecks, betrayal, and poverty. So when Paul, shipwreck, beating, prison-guy Paul, teaches about peace, I want to listen. How was he peaceful even in really stressful times?

Paul's letters teach us three things about this peace:

1. It's special. In Ephesians, Jesus is called our peace. When accept Christ as our Savior, we are given a peace that comes only from having our sin forgiven and our standing put right with God. That kind of peace is a foundational experience of being made "right." or righteous.

2. It's constant. In 2 Thessalonians, Paul prays that believers would know that peace at all times and in every way. We don't have to stress and strain with our life circumstances. We can pray for peace even in really stressful situations--and actually experience a difference in our life. Where we used to always feel stressed, we can feel a strange new thing--that's God's peace.

3. It rules our hearts. In Colossians, Paul talks about this peace "ruling" in our hearts. Commentators say that the Greek word used here means "referee." Have you ever thought about Jesus in your heart "refereeing" your feelings? Telling you when to speak and when to be quiet? Calming your anxiety? Teaching you about why you feel the way you do and helping you to understand yourself better? That's what He does when we allow him (and his peace) to rule.

Try it:

Sometime this week you are bound to feel stressed out. Schoolwork, family relationships, friendships or pressures unique to your situation create opportunities for stress and worry. When that time comes, try a deep breath and try a prayer like this:

Dear Jesus, you call yourself my peace. Right now I don't feel peaceful, I feel _______ (stressed, angry, overwhelmed, worried, lonely....).

But I believe what you say, that you offer your peace at all times, and that your peace can rule my heart. I ask you Jesus to let that peace rise up in me now. Please help me to know your peace that is beyond my understanding. (Philippians 4:7)

When people are peaceful in good circumstances, it's normal.

But when someone is peaceful in a hard, stressful time? Now that's special!

If you experience peace in a hard time this week, make sure you share that experience with someone. When praying for peace works, share it. If reading a scripture worked, share that.

Not only that: when you experience that peace, others will notice. Be prepared to share the truth of the source of your peace. There is no greater witness to God's ability to transform our hearts than having a spirit of peace instead of worry.

Finishing the Race!

Chilean miner wins NY hearts by finishing marathon

(Reuters) - He finished more than three and a half hours behind the champion, yet Chilean miner Edison Pena won the hearts of spectators with an inspiring effort at the New York City Marathon Sunday.

Pena, the 12th miner brought to the surface last month after being trapped with 32 companions for 69 days, ran daily through the tunnels of the mine until the rescue and was invited to New York by race organizers.

Coping with aching knees during his 26.2-mile trip through the five boroughs of New York, Pena completed the journey in five hours 40 minutes 51 seconds to sustained cheers from crowds of more than two million who lined the course.

"It was worthwhile for me to come this far to run a marathon, because I want to motivate people," Pena, 34, told reporters. "I want to convince them that they can do what they set out to do in life.

"In this marathon I struggled. I struggled with myself, I struggled with my own pain, but I made it to the finish line. I want to motivate other people to also find the courage and strength to transcend their own pain."

Pena, whose effervescent personality made him the toast of New York this week on TV and around town, ran the first half of the race before pain forced him to stop at a medical stand and have ice packs strapped to both knees.

He walked the rest of the way, before summoning the strength to run the last stretch to the Central Park finish.

"I could have come here to watch the marathon instead of running," Pena said. "I could have just been a special guest, but I wanted to take up the challenge of running."

Hebrews 12:1-3 (ESV)

1Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

3 Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about endurance?

Talk about endurance.  When most might have been tempted to call it quits, Pena kept his eyes on the finish line, and with "ice packs strapped to both knees," finished the NY Marathon.  That's a pretty amazing feat considering most of his training was running everyday in that Chilean mine. This weekend in front of millions of witnesses, Pena finished the race.

According to the writer of Hebrews, we too are in a race, "surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses."  Life is a race that definitely calls for endurance and for us to keep our eyes on the finish line.  For us, as followers of Jesus, we know that he is our motivation.  It is because of him that we can endure whatever trials we face in this race called life.

How can I connect today's God's Story scripture to My Life?

  • Are you running this race with your eyes on Jesus?  The New International Version states that we need to be "fixing our eyes on Jesus."  It's not just about looking toward him or thinking of him every now and then.  If we are going to run this race the way the Father intended for us to run, we need to look to Jesus, and never take our eyes off of him.
  • Maybe you have taken your eyes off of Jesus in this race and it has caused you to stumble. All we have to do to get back into the race is turn our eyes back to Jesus and start running again.  It might be painful, and there may be some consequences we have to deal with, but we are still in the race.
  • Thank God today for the "great cloud of witnesses" who have already run this race.  Allow them to be your motivation for whatever obstacles you might encounter in the race that has been "set before" you.

How can I connect Today's Story, My Story, and God's Story to Others?

  • Do you have a friend who has stumbled in the race because they've taken their eyes off of Jesus?  Give them some encouragement today by praying with them about their struggles.
  • Help them up and get them back into the race by offering to be there for them as they encounter obstacles along the way.  Offer to meet with them regularly to see how they are doing.
  • Ask your friend if the two of you could meet together once a week to either read God's Story together or pray together or hold each other accountable to keeping your eyes "fixed" on Jesus.  It's always more fun to run with someone.

An eight-ton boulder that was pulled from the Ohio River at Greenup County, Kentucky and taken to Portsmouth, Ohio in 2007 will soon be returned to Kentucky.

Officials say a face carved in Indian Head Rock could make it a Native American artifact. That’s why, after the rock was pulled from the water by an expedition of Ohioans, Kentucky filed a civil suit to have it returned.

The states reached a settlement in the case this week and the boulder will soon be sent to a storage facility in Greenup County.

Kentucky Heritage Council director Mark Dennen says he and his colleagues must now find a location to display the rock to the public.

“It can be outside, it could be indoors,” he says. “It doesn’t need to be in a climate-controlled environment. What we do want to make sure is that we’re protecting it, to a certain extent, from the elements, and, most importantly, we want to make sure it’s protected from vandalism.”

Dennen says educational materials will be produced to accompany the display. Funding for the display has not yet been secured.

Luke 19:28-40 (NLT)

Jesus’ Triumphant Entry
28 After telling this story, Jesus went on toward Jerusalem, walking ahead of his disciples. 29 As he came to the towns of Bethphage and Bethany on the Mount of Olives, he sent two disciples ahead. 30 “Go into that village over there,” he told them. “As you enter it, you will see a young donkey tied there that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks, ‘Why are you untying that colt?’ just say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”

32 So they went and found the colt, just as Jesus had said. 33 And sure enough, as they were untying it, the owners asked them, “Why are you untying that colt?”

34 And the disciples simply replied, “The Lord needs it.” 35 So they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their garments over it for him to ride on. 36 As he rode along, the crowds spread out their garments on the road ahead of him. 37 When he reached the place where the road started down the Mount of Olives, all of his followers began to shout and sing as they walked along, praising God for all the wonderful miracles they had seen.

38 “Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the Lord!
Peace in heaven, and glory in highest heaven!”

39 But some of the Pharisees among the crowd said, “Teacher, rebuke your followers for saying things like that!”

40 He replied, “If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into cheers!”

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about rocks?
Can you imagine the stories that Indian Head Rock could tell if it could speak?  Stories dating back to the Native Americans who might have carved that face into the hard surface.  Stories from today about two states fighting over whose rock it is and where it belongs.  Can you picture a rock telling stories?  Can you picture a rock "bursting into cheers"?  It's nearly impossible to imagine, but Jesus himself said that if the people would have kept quiet that day that he rode into Jerusalem, the rocks would have done just that.  Why?

We are often reminded of today's God's Story scripture at the beginning of Easter week, as we celebrate Palm Sunday.  Yet the climate of the day Jesus road into Jerusalem was very political, much like the week that is just ending.  Yes, politcal.  Check out what Tyndale's Life Application Study Bible Notes have to say about this passage ...

The people who were praising God for giving them a king had the wrong idea about Jesus.  They expected him to be a national leader who would restore their nation to its former glory, and thus they were deaf to the words of their prophets and blind to Jesus' real mission.  When it became apparent that Jesus was not going to fulfill their hopes, many people turned against him ... Jesus wasn't setting up a powerful political kingdom but he was establishing God's eternal Kingdom, a reason for the greatest celebration of all.

How can I connect today's God's Story scripture to My Life?
Who is praising Jesus louder right now? Is it You, or is it the rocks along the side of the road?  Here are some suggestions to turn up your volume on praising Jesus ...

  • Carve out some time this weekend to be alone with Jesus.
  • Talk to him out loud, thanking him for all he has done in your life this week.
  • Sing his praises, literally sing them. Find a place where you can sing loudly, whether you sing in tune or not, to an audience of One.

How can I connect Today's Story, My Story and God's Story to Others?
It's not very likely that you or any of your friends have seen Today's Story.  You might, however, have the oppotunity to see a rock or two in your community.  Be intentional about starting conversations with your friends who aren't yet following Jesus.  If you live in a community with a river, a state line, or large rocks, you could have some great conversations about Today's Story, and therefore today's God's Story scripture.

Bar None to Praising God

Today’s Story

Has anyone ever told you that you have the voice of a prisoner?  Wait for it….wait for it…..you know, because you're behind a few bars and searching for a key.

My dad told me this joke last week and I still think it’s funny.  I can’t believe how many times a day I find myself humming a song and I don’t even know why it’s in my head.  Someone can mention a phrase or word and off in my head goes the tune and words to some song that I connect it with.

I’m a musical person.  I’ve been singing practically as long as I’ve been talking.  There are times when the only thing that makes me feel better is going to the church and singing, singing, singing.  There’s something about singing from your heart (and soul) that encourages you and lifts your spirit as your worship the Lord.

Acts 16:25a NIV About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God (in jail)…..
What does today’s Scripture Story teach us about barring anything between us and God's praise?

Nothing was going to stop Paul and Silas from making a joyful noise and praising God even in the midst of jail.  They didn’t let their surroundings dictate their attitude.  I like the fact that they weren’t singing “Woe is me” songs or “Why me, Lord” type hymns.  I believe they belted out and sang loudly to God. They praised Him. And a miracle happened while they praise the Lord (you’ll want to keep reading the story in Acts 16).

God removed them from their bondage – literally!  Their chains were broken!  They were set free, yet stayed and continued to minister to those who were in need.

How can we connect today’s God’s Story scripture to our lives?

Listen to praise songs.  Find at least one that speaks to you or seems like it comes straight from your heart.  Forget what you may know about Christian or worship music.  There is a variety of styles of Christian music that you can find on line…rap, country, pop and more.

Take a cue from David and other psalm writers from the Bible and write a song.  Journal your feelings and thoughts onto paper.  It doesn’t have to rhyme; just put down why you believe God is worthy of your praise.

If singing's not your thing, you can dance to the Lord, draw or paint, or somehow creatively praise the Lord.  Determine not to let what might imprison you to keep you behind bars.  Sing a psalm or song.  Belt it out!  Dance to Him! Let your artist side glorify God.
How can we connect today’s story, God’s Story scripture, and our story to others?

Let God put a song in your heart.  Tell your friends what spiritual song(s) means a lot to you and why you can sing songs of hope and praise even when you’re having a bad hair day or a bad week.

Read the entire story of Acts 16.  Then share what you read with a friend.  Ask them what they do when they feel they’re held captive.  And then let the song of praise that God gives you be your key to freedom….beyond the bars.

In God We Trust

Ahh, the elections are OVER!  For some of you you're giving a sigh of relief, thankful that you don't have to watch another politically charged commercial (at least for a while), or pick up the phone only to hear the automated voice of a stranger on the other line attempting to convince you to vote a certain way.  Of course, you also may be celebrating because the person/party you voted for has come out victorious!  You're excited about the possibilities and change that may be on the horizon.  Then there are those of you who are highly disappointed.  You're crushed that things did not go the way you think they should; promises have been broken in elections past and, after this one, you're left feeling defeated and hopeless.  I'm sure there are a lot of mixed feelings this morning as you read this.  Even as I sit here and write this, I don't know the results of the election, but I do know one thing:  no matter what changes do or do not take place in the Senate, the House, or in your local city, our God is in control and He has already chosen and elected those leaders, with purpose.

Romans 13:1

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about submitting to authority?

As Christians, we tend to have no problem with following, supporting, and submitting to authority when it's someone with whom we agree, somebody who claims to share our spiritual, moral, and ethical belief system. When it comes to those who do not share our values, however, we really struggle to support and submit to their authority, and we justify ourselves by claiming allegiance to Christ.  Today's scripture really challenges that line of thinking, in fact it blows it to pieces.  When Paul spoke these words, it was to a group of Christians who were tempted to criticize and rebel against the government and leadership they'd been placed under.  Sound familiar?  God used Paul to remind the church at Rome that He was in control, that no man would be elected unless He allowed it, and even ordained it.  Afterall, God has been known to use unlikely candidates to further His Kingdom and will.  Although it may be hard (from our limited view) to understand what God is doing and why, we are called to submit not only to His authority, but also to the authority and order of government (which God put in place), trusting and believing that God is Sovereign.  He has a plan, and He is always in control.

How can I connect today's God's Story scripture to my life?

Consider your attitude toward our government, the officials that have been put in place, and the authority they have been given over our country.  Have you been critical, harsh, or rebellious (outwardly or inwardly)?  What does the attitude you have toward those in leadership say about your trust in God?  Is it showing others how much you trust in His Sovereignty, or is it screaming doubt, fear, and uncertainty about what God is allowing to happen?  Don't let God and your faith be an excuse to rebel against that which He has put in place.   Pray and ask God to help you have the right attitude and perspective when it comes to the authority of government and the individuals that have been placed in authority over you.

How can I connect today's story, God's Story scripture, and my story to others?

As you talk to others today (and any day) about the future of our country, the leadership that has been elected into office, or the way our government is run, it's okay to disagree and express concern, but use it also as a time to share about your faith in the Sovereignty of God.  Help those you're around see your trust in God, firsthand, by seeing how you respect the authority and order of government that He has put into place, even (and especially) when you disagree.  Respect the position, and submit to the laws and authority, because you know that by doing so, you are submitting to the authority of Christ.

The choice to say NO

 personal life pie chart

In the past, my “no” seemed to be broken. I hated to disappoint people. I figured that if someone had thought enough of me to ask for my help, I’d better give it. So whether working in the church nursery or leading a school club, I just couldn’t say no.

Everything that I was involved in was a good thing, but it didn’t feel that way. I went from a cheerful optimist to a major stress case! Being part of everything led to enjoying nothing, and I ended up feeling irritated and isolated.

One day, a mentor grabbed some paper and drew a pie chart. She asked me to write down every involvement in my life within the circle and show how much time I gave to each. I gave a little bit to everything I could, but by the time I finished, I had left me, my family and God out. My friend said, “I know you aim to please others, but by trying to make everyone happy, you are losing your own joy.  You are going to disappoint someone. Do you want it to be God or your family, or one of these other things?”

When I looked at it that way, I realized saying “yes” because I didn’t want to disappoint anyone wasn’t good for me. By choosing to please others, I wasn’t listening to what God wanted.  Since then, I’ve tried to stop and pray before saying yes to new involvements.  Every time I stutter out a “no” it gets a little easier!

Mark 8:36 (MSG)

36"What good would it be to get everything you want but lose you, the real you?

What does today's story Scripture teach me about choices?

In Mark 8, Jesus is talking to his disciples about the reality of following him. When we choose to follow God's way, we have to make hard choices. Jesus calls this "taking up our cross." Putting God first means putting ourselves second.

The problem is, sometimes we think "putting God first" means saying yes to any and everything that we perceive as "good." But that's not what Jesus says. Honestly, sometimes we say yes just because it's easier than saying no! But Jesus often took the harder choice and said "no" to people in order that he might say "yes" to God. As Christians, we have to watch out that in our quest to do good things, we don't crowd out the space we need to hear from God and actually follow what HE says.

How can I connect today's God Story Scripture to my life?

Here's some questions to ask yourself about your "no":

  • How do I balance my commitments to family, school, church, friends, God and myself? When has my life been out of balance? What did I learn from my mistakes?

  • When people ask me to volunteer, why do I feel the need to say yes? Am I trying to impress God or others? to be accepted? to live out my faith? to secure a college scholarship? to prove my worth? Why do I waffle between yes and no instead of saying what I really feel?

  • When I say yes to too many activities and commitments, how does it affect my attitude? my relationships? my performance? my soul?

How can I connect today's story, my story and God's Story Scripture to others?

Our inability to say what we really mean can be a major hindrance in our relationship with friends. Do you think you tend to say "yes" too much or "no" too much? How has that affected your relationships with friends?

If you aren't making space for God, it's very difficult to care for anyone else. The best love for others comes out of our own learning and devotional time with God. What do you need to say "no" to this week in order to say "yes" to God?

The payoff is worth it: by saying yes to God, you will love others better. They'll notice!

What Does Dad Get?

Every year we head out to Trick or Treat, usually making our way to at least one local church holding a "Trunk or Treat" for a really big score of candy.  Then, when we finally get home, the annual annoucement is made, "Whatever you don't want, Dad gets."  Last night it consisted of a KitKat and several Almond Joys (my personal favorite).

Exodus 23:19 (ESV)

19"The best of the firstfruits of your ground you shall bring into the house of the LORD your God.

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about giving our Father the leftovers?

When we read about bringing offerings to the Father in the Old Testament, we see that the He asks us not for the leftovers, but the "firstfruits." As much as I am okay with getting the candy my kids don't want, God wants our best. But there is a little twist of irony in the midst of this.

You see, when my kids are passing off the dreaded Almond Joy, I can't wait. As they look at what they have to offer, they in reality are giving me what I want the most. When we offer our lives to the Father, many times what we consider unworthy, God looks at and says, "that's what I've been waiting for all along."

How can I connect today's God's Story scripture to My Life?

  • Is there a part of your life that you haven't felt worthy of offering to the Father? Give it to him now.
  • Have you been holding back part of your life from the Father? Give it to him now.

How can I connect Today's Story, My Story, and God's Story to Others?

  • Have you seen some friends struggling with what it means to offer your best to the Father? Talk with them today and pray with them as they let go of those areas of their life and give them to the Father.
  • Get together with some friends and share some of your struggles of letting go of those areas of your life.  It will be a great encouragement to walk this journey together, as well as a great source of accountability to keep giving the Father what He's asking for ... your "firstfruits."
